'Tae Kwon Do' Necklaces
(Korean & Japanese Kanji)

Tae Kwon Do - Our Kanji Tae Kwon Do necklace celebrates the Korean martial art of Tae Kwon Do.

Tae means 'Kick', Kwon means 'Punch' and Do means 'path or way'. Together Tae Kwon Do translates as the 'Way (Art) of Kicking and Punching'.

Unlike many of the other Martial Arts, Tae Kwon Do is relatively new and was not recognized as it's own form of martial art until 1957. The Tae Kwon Do has it's origins in Karate which was taught to the Korean military in the early 1950's.

The Korean influence created a style of style of Karate that was so different from Japanese Karate that it soon became it's own Martial Art. Tae Kwon Do has more emphasis on high, jumping and spinning kicks than traditional Karate.

Known for it's spectacular kicks Tae Kwon Do was introduced to the Olympics in 1988 as a demonstration sport. In the 2000 Olympic's in Australia, Tae Kwon Do became a full status olympic sport making it only the second Martial Art to attain such a status. (Judo is the other Martial Art given official Olympic status.)

We offer our Tae Kwon Do necklaces in Korean or Japanese Kanji - see below.

Tae Kwon Do Belt System

Tae Kwon Do adopted it's belt system from Judo and Karate. 'Do' means path or way in Japanese. The belt system recognizes a students path in Tae Kwon Do.

White Belt – this is not an earned belt, every starting student of Tae Kwon Do begins wearing a white belt.
Yellow Belt – to earn a yellow belt a student of Tae Kwon Do must demonstrate knowledge of the basic skills of Tae Kwon Do. (The color yellow symbolizes the earth.)
Orange Belt – to earn an organge belt, a student of Tae Kwon Do must show further developement and understanding of the principles and discplines of Tae Kwon Do.(The color orange symbolizes the advent of Autumn.)
Green Belt – Green signifies growth like a plant. To earn a green belt in Tae Kwon Do a student must show continued development in the techniques of Tae Kwon Do.
Blue Belt – blue represents the sky and helps the student keep focused on achieving their higher goals in Tae Kwon Do.
Purple Belt – the purple belt represents change as a purple sky represents a change in the weather. The Tae Kwon Do student is now moving into a more advanced level of Tae Kwon Do achievement.
Brown Belt – now an advanced student, the brown belt represents the maturing process. A green sapling has now ripened into a brown tree.
Red Belt – as with all martial arts, the practitioner is taught to temper their new gained skills. Red stands for blood and it is a reminder to students to use their skills with wisdom.
Black – the highest color belt level a student of Tae Kwon Do can achieve - truly an accomplishment signifying years of training and a high level of technique and skill level. Some say that the journey of truly becoming a master of Tae Kwon Do only begins once you have earned your black belt.
